The timing of your planning is dependent on your particular circumstances. For example, starting your spend down too early can cause serious problems. If you are married, you may convert some of your non-exempt assets to the exempt property before the date that Medicaid uses to decide how much of your non-exempt assets your in-home spouse can keep.

If you are single, spending down or divesting in order to qualify for Medicaid before you enter a nursing home may seriously limit your placement choices.
